What would you do if you were given a brand new year 2000 Yamaha YZ426FM, and told..."all ya gotta do, is race it" ?
If you were like me, you'd start with that cheap-assed chain...
I Use this monster for Cross Country, & Desert Racing so here are the special mods I've performed to make it just right...
Controls: Pro Grip gray matter grips, on Answer Pro-Taper bars, clamped to a Scotts upper T-Clamp. Of course there's a Scotts steering stabilizer there as well. I'm using that Magura Hydro Clutch ( !! ) With an Enduro Engineering Bearing Lever, and use the Moose hand guards with Cycra covers. I'm using the T-2 throttle cables from Motion Pro, and I also installed the Yamaha electronic tach / hour meter to aid in tuning & maintenance practices. Is the seat part of the controls? Well, at any rate I'm using the Ceet tall-firm foam or the SDG one piece unit, and a One Industries YZM Graphics package and an Acerbis long range fuel cell ( I also have a special white stock size tank for show ). Fenders & number plates are from UFO Plastics.
Suspension: As usual, I only allow Race Tech to do my suspension work, & Brian Storrie over at SMS Racing ( your local Race Tech Center ) did a great job of installing the famous Gold Valves, front & rear. I'm also using Race Tech Springs front & rear to balance things out. Mucho Stiffer of course. The front wheel is a 20 inch Excel modular hub & rim... spline drive spokes, of course. I'm also using what I feel to be one of the best inventions for the YZ suspension, and that is the Zip-Ty rear suspension link, it's about 5mm longer than stock, & does a fantastic job of keeping the back end down during stutter bumps & such other nasty stuff. And of course the frame's been powder coated gray...just like the original YZM.
Drive: I like the RK X-Ring chain, and the Renthal rear sprocket ( 51 tooth ) front is stock. I'm using a Wikit Racing chain guide cause it's wide enough to handle a real chain, & seems ( thus far ) fairly hearty...though the plastic insert did warp & rub against my new sprocket.
Tires: For the riding I do I like the Dunlop 756 front tire ( 20 inch ), and as of late the Pirelli MT44 ( Laguna-Cross ) on the rear. It's Beef!!! Of course I use Bridgestone "Fatty" inner tubes on both ends.
Stoppers: I'm using the EBC product, the MXS, front & rear with great results, & I've added the massive 280mm front disk ( also from EBC ) and a Fastline steel braided brake line, for a little somethin' extra out front. I found that GYRT ( Cycra ) makes a cover for it as well.
Engine: Thumper Racing helped me get my hands on one of Randy Hawkins used cylinders, and delivered it to me as a 450cc jug, with piston & gaskets & such so...it's a 450! White Brothers R-4 S Bend Silencer on a Hi-Boy Tapered head pipe, for the fast stuff, & I switch to an E-Series for the tighter more technical trails. White Brothers Power filter. Terrycable 10oz. flywheel weight. 45 Pilot. Clip in #5. 165 Main. Fuel Screw 2 3/4 out. Stock clutch plates. Hinson Clutch Basket, Motul 5100 oil.
Goodies: Maier Plastic skidplate, Maier frame Guards. Terrycable neutral switch eliminator. Zip-Ty remote Hot start button, Bar P Exhaust heat shield, and chain / case saver. 2-Dads Racing Frame Mounted Kickstand.
To Gary Hazel at Thumper Racing for what I think is the strongest YZF engine in the game.
North Texas Yamaha, helped me get hold of the air filters, exhaust, GYRT parts, & the cute little electro-tach.
Will Pattison sponsored me on the neat little neutral switch cover thingie, the pipe heat shield, and the chain guide / case guard, and has offered much tech support on this, my first four stroke racer.
Everything else, from front to back, came from Bates Discount Cycle Parts, in a timely fashion, & at a fair price.
